SUNDAY MESS/ WALLBOARD

Bild
For my FMP I decided to utilise my room as a visual diary, being constantly surrounded by my work really helped me to make connections between research topics and responses. Not being limited to a certain scale also increases the volume of things that can flow into it because you’re not forced to edit the raw imagery or encounter. The wall doesn’t only have to be 2D, technically I can include absolutely everything. I prefer having themed corners within my wallboard, so it almost works as a jigsaw. As an example I recreated one page in my sketchbook that shows all the things I collected within one day, all (coincidentally) religiously themed. When we left the house a priest gave us those prospectus, at the car-boot sale I found a dia from the last supper and after lunch I found this rather bizarre sculptured of a capitalised Jesus. Making all these connections is like  training for research, really inspirational and helps me to organise my work.  ...

What is German?

Bild
In my last crit, I was informed to produce more positive content for my magazine. Also in order to create a narrative, I was missing something I couldn't really figure out what until I talked to Sarah.  My research was mainly focused on the post-war history which is generally quite dark and depressing. But in order to create a narrative, I need to have a strong identity which is easily comprehensible. The group and also one-to-one tutorial gave me some really good ideas which inspired me to look into the things that happened before the war. Positive aspects of German history.  For example, the 20s when Bauhaus Designs were taking over Weimar and later the whole world. Or Berlin in the 30s, when it was probably the most liberal and frivolous place by then.  questionnaire on "what is German" Also, my own perception of Germany didn't really help me in my own research as I don't meet the customer and I am obviously biased. To get more information and t...

Kunst ist wenn man trotzdem lacht

Bild
Today I visited the Thaddaeus Ropac gallery in Mayfair. Their latest exhibition is a retro perspective of German artist Joseph Beuys.  The Beuys myth says that when he was a pilot during World War II he crashed his Stuka over the Crimea. Later he was found by a tribe of nomadic Tartars. They wrapped him in fat and felt to keep him warm to save his life.  His whole legacy, also art revolves around this myth, which mainly includes medicine, fat, felt and electricity.  "Art as a spiritual first aid for a damaged national psyche, sculpture as a healing object, performance as shamanic ritual – and it’s some of the most important art of the twentieth century." - Eddy Frankel  He became famous through political activism and some really controversial statements on art. As a lecturer, he questioned and educated a whole generation of artists.   "Kunst ist wenn man trotzdem lacht" Even though he is so famous within the art scene and his name is recogni...

We are outside!

Bild
Something that stands out in my target market research is that everyone I've interviewed likes to work in the garden and to spend time outside. Something I didn't expect at all. When I interviewed their kids none of them mentioned any outside activities, except football (preferably inside).  When I went home for Easter I tried to gather as many photos from my childhood and also my parent's life as possible. Going through all these years of analogue photography it almost felt like time was going by extremely slow until digitalisation.  At least half of my childhood I spend outside in our garden, naked. Something that you could not imagine anymore at this age. We were free to do whatever we wanted to do until the first day of school, the day all creativity starts to diminish.  Plying outside and getting in touch with nature at an early age is vital for a kids development. We never had Ipads or access to any digital devices. Watching a fairy tale every Sunday at 1...

Update Customer: post war child

Bild
Since I realised that I need a new customer I've collected a huge amount of target market research to profile the new customer who is pretty much the opposite of my initial customer. To gather all this new information I've interviewed my mum's friends, all female and around 45-55. Through the target market research of my first customer who was 14-18, I found out that this generation is really interested and willing to learn from the other but just doesn't have the chance to ask because their parents are still quite traumatised. Since my aim was to produce a magazine that could change the way of processing our history so that it is more comprehensible for the following generations I had to find the core problem, which seems to lay in my mum's generation. Unprocessed traumata suppressed but subconsciously acted out through party, sexual and spiritual excesses. The content I produce now is still educational but also a way of trying to make up and highlight the fe...

FRIDAY WAKE UP CRIT

Bild
Handbook for unit 7 grading criteria Working all this time, doing research, neglecting my customer created a huge mess. Yesterday I've realised that I do not know my customer enough to create the best work I could. This crit today confirmed that. My work is not in depth enough, even though the whole theme is really dark, it cannot be to depressing considering my customer is on around16 years old. To change this I will do more target market research, also I will use my final piece to tell a story which will make it more balanced, including not only negative informations but also positive.  The plan for this weekend is to catch up and finish enough research to shoot twice this weekend. Research is vital, therefore I will embed more Data to prove my responses that will all go into the final Magazine which will be a sort of history book/ journal.  There are so man ways to show emotions and also portray my solutions so that I will not only use photography which is q...

WENN DU JUNG BIST BIST DU ALT/ experiment

Bild
Concept board for the experiment  “Wenn du alt bist, bist du jung” (when you are old, you are young) For this series of youth documentation I shadowed my friend for a day, initially, I just wanted to interview him in between and write about it but as we began to talk I started taking pictures, he automatically directed me.  The initial idea was to show the contrast between our and my customer's generation to give them an insight into their children's lives for understanding but also raising awareness of things that don't really go so well, like the constant surrounding of social media. We started the day at uni, went home to eat all night and binge Netflix - something you would do every day as a teenager in 2018. I did the same thing throughout my whole teenage years until I met my best friends who also has ADHD. Together we could never just sit still together and do nothing for too long, as I realised now it's the way for me to stay sane.  The pictures wer...

DIGIphrenia = OK

Bild
Today Hanna came in to tell us about her third year final project. It was so helpful as her work was so structured, even though you could feel how much work went/ goes into it, it still was easy to understand and though really intriguing.  Definitely time to include more data and information through research!  The task was to convey the theme and portray it one one page. My idea was to build a step to step to get insta-fame, so we build around this idea and created a cover which I think turned out quite well. An ironic but actually not too far from reality way to understand what goes on right now, in reality on instagram.  This piece is called “THE GAME TO INSTA FAME”. An ironic combination of using print media to give a step to step how to become famous online.

Der Gott der Aussteiger steigt aus/ Rajneeshpuram

Bild
Collage of Rajneeshpuram impressions Watching the documentary wild wild country was incredibly emotional in a really uncomfortable way. Many connections I couldn't really link to anything I've seen before. Knowing a lot about Jones Town I was shocked when someone told me about the documentary and never even heard about this sect before.  Germans are generally really sensitive when it comes to movements of religious or political groups. The war left such a painful stamp in everyone's mind, people became loners. Maybe you would still join the sports club or countrywoman club, anything that couldn't become too political or powerful. Though there is a huge interest in sects and tribes since the post-war generation never got to understand what happened in their parent's minds, hushed up, experiences their parents would never share.  It feels like this fascination carried through to our generation. Maybe it's something personal but I've always been the...

GEGENAN

Bild
Gegenan - Provocation - Attention - Cult - Performance - Ideology -  All these things are linked to the youth of my customer. Being rebellious is a part o puberty but not of our state or system anymore.  Growing up my customer experienced the constant fear of a Cold War, they were extremely political even in their teenage years, something that changed drastically over the years.  Once there was a counting, they were walking around and registering every citizen. Even this was too intimidating, an act against their personal privacy rights. Nowadays we're happy to give away all our rights, let Facebook have our nudes and let everyone know about our sex life. Their generation was rebellious, they didn't accept anything (like we do every time we download an unnecessary app) unless they know everything about it.  Finishing research fields linked to disorders and the post-war era I've decided to start a more empowering chapter and look into the more progressi...
